Secret Ingredient Beef Chili

This chili recipe is filled with veggies, two kinds of meat (beef and sausage), an abundant amount of seasonings and a secret ingredient for the perfect hearty bowl of chili.

1 pound Italian sausage 1 pound ground beef 1 cup onion diced 2 cups green bell peppers diced 4 cloves garlic minced 3 jalapeño peppers sliced 2 15 ounce can black beans drained and rinsed 2 15 ounce cans red kidney beans drained and rinsed 1 15 ounce cans corn drained and rinsed 2 28 ounce cans crushed tomatoes 2 cups beef broth Seasonings 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon oregano 2 teaspoons cumin powder 1 teaspoon basil 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon coriander ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon soy sauce
In a skillet on medium high heat, brown the sausage then dice and set aside.
In the same skillet, brown the ground beef and set aside.
Reserve some fat in the pan and add onion, bell peppers, garlic cloves and jalapeño peppers. Sauté on medium high heat for 5 minutes.
In a large Dutch oven, add the peppers and onion mixture and remaining ingredients. Mix until well combined and bring to a boil on medium heat.
Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Serve with cheese, cilantro, avocado, sour cream, lime, chips, Hawaiian rolls, corn bread, or rice.
Slow cooker instructions: Follow steps 1-3 then add the ingredients to a slow cooker and cook on high for 3 hours or low for 5-6 hours.
Freeze the chili for up to 3 months in a freezer safe container.
