Simple and delicious homemade wonton soup!
You've probably had wonton soup from your favorite Chinese take out restaurant but what if I said you could make even better homemade wonton soup before the delivery driver rings your doorbell?
Wonton filling is traditionally made with ground pork but you can experiment with other proteins like tofu, beef, shrimp and chicken. You can also sneak some additional veggies like mushrooms, cabbage or carrots into the wontons.
This classic recipe is made with ground pork and scallions.
When I don't feel like cooking, I heat up some chicken broth, boil the frozen wontons for five minutes, sprinkle some scallions and voila-- wonton soup!
There are so many ways to wrap wontons. Here is the way my dad wrapped them at his restaurant.
You can make wonton wrapping a fun family affair since this recipe makes a lot of wontons, about 50 depending on how much filling you like.
How to Store & Freeze Wontons
- Cooked wontons can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. Store the wonton and broth separately.
- Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Freeze uncooked wontons in a single layer on a cookie tray until frozen then store in a zip lock bag.
How to Serve Wonton Soup
- Light & classic wonton soup with wontons, broth and scallions.
- Serve as a side dish to a main meal.
- Make it a full meal by adding noodles and vegetables like boy choy or Chinese broccoli
Wonton Soup
Ingredients
Wonton Filling
- 1 lb ground pork
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- ¼ cup scallions thinly sliced
- ¼ teaspoon white pepper
- 1 tablespoon shaoxing wine
- 16 oz wonton wrappers
Broth
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon shaoxing wine
- white pepper to taste
- ¼ cup scallions thinly sliced
Instructions
- Make the wonton filling: In a bowl, mix ground pork, soy sauce, scallions, white pepper, Shaoxing wine.
- Wrap the wontons by placing one wonton wrapper in your hand. Place 1-2 teaspoons of filling into the center of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper starting from the left bottom corner over the filling. Then fold again. Using your finger or a butter knife, moisten the left corner of the wrapper and fold with the other corner, pinch to seal. Repeat with the rest of the filling.
- Cook the wontons: Bring a pot of water to a boil and add wontons. Cook for 5 minutes, gently move the wontons around 1-2 times to make sure they don't stick.
- Simmer the broth: In a pot, bring chicken broth, soy sauce, white pepper and Shaoxing wine to a simmer. Drain the wontons and add to the broth. Top with scallions. Happy nomming!
Notes
- The broth recipe is for about four servings. Serve with as many wontons as you'd like.
- This recipe makes about 40-50 wontons.
